Have you noticed dark patches of skin since becoming pregnant? Find out what causes it and how to conceal it.

Thanks to pregnancy hormones, dark patches of skin can appear on your face (usually upper lip, cheeks and forehead) as well as other body parts. Dubbed the “mask of pregnancy” or chloasma, this hyperpigmentation is caused by an increase in the amount of melanin your body produces.

What can you do to cover up skin discoloration during pregnancy? You can avoid exposing your skin to the sun, though the use of sunscreen and a hat. Cover up existing dark patches by using a concealer to blend away the dark patches. To get the best results, go to a make-up counter where you can try on different shades to get the right color.

Once you are no longer pregnant and not breastfeeding, you can use a skin lightening cream to help further lighten the dark areas.
