Furnishing and decorating a nursery for baby can get expensive. There are ways to create the perfect space for your little bundle, without breaking into the college fund.

One area in which you can save some money is by forgoing buying an expensive changing table. Celebrity baby designer Wendy Bellissimo has this tip:

“I believe in extended use for everything, both in design and construction. Instead of buying a changing table, you can attach a thick, slipcovered changing pad to a chest of drawers.”

When buying furniture, consider looking for pieces that are tough. “With all that banging, it’s best to find furniture with a hand-rubbed or distressed finish,” Bellissimo writes in her book, Nesting. “Not only does it look charming now, it will look just as good through years of nicks and scratches—so you can concentrate on your children’s “ouchies” not the furniture’s.”
