Maternity clothes timeline: What to buy now and later
December 3, 2008
If you have just found out you are pregnant, you may be wondering what you should buy now and what you should buy later. Before you waste your money, get the 4-1-1 on your maternity clothes time line.
What should you buy now?
While you are in that awkward in-between stage, a Bella Band (pictured, IngridandIsabel.com) will help you transition from your normal jeans into your maternity jeans. It is basically a stretchy band of material that fits around your non-maternity jeans concealing the unbuttoned top button and ensuring a better fit.
Other newly-pregnant maternity essentials include sweaters or shirts (depending on the season) that are made of a stretchy material and are a longer length. These do not have to be “maternity” to be easily worn throughout trimesters 1 and 2, as long as they are long enough and stretchy enough to accommodate for your belly. You are also safe purchasing under-the-belly maternity jeans and pants – especially if you are nearing your second trimester. As soon as your bra starts feeling tight (usually around week eight) go ahead and buy a supportive maternity bra.
What should you buy later?
You may need to buy another bra if your cup size continues to grow throughout your pregnancy. Once you are in your 2nd trimester, you should go ahead and buy that cute maternity dress you have had your eye on, as well as maternity jeans/pants. Empire waist tops, wrap tops and dresses can all be easily worn throughout your pregnancy.
Look for clothes that can be adjusted and will grow with you. Details like tie backs, buttons and elastic will all allow plenty of room for growing belly.
