How to buy a maternity swimsuit
May 13, 2008

Along with warmer weather and longer days, summer brings along another rite of passage: swimsuit shopping. Don’t fret, pregnant mama, today’s maternity suits come in a variety of bump flattering designs that will reveal as little (or as much) as you want. You can find stylish swimsuits to fit a variety of budgets, from expensive (Isabella Oliver, A Pea in the Pod) to modest (Target and Old Navy).
How much exposure do you want? If you love showing off your bump, a sexy bikini is the way to go. If you want more coverage than a bikini, a flirty full-piece suit would fit the bill. A tankini would be the choice for you if you want the flirty feel of a bikini, only with more coverage.
Do you need to buy a “maternity” swimsuit? Because of the stretchy fabric and forgiving cuts, you could buy a “non maternity” suit, as long as it is not a full piece. If you want to wear a full piece, your best bet is to buy a maternity swimsuit that has details, such as side shirring, that will allow you to fit in your suit as your tummy grows. Maternity swimsuits may also provide you with more bust support than a regular suit.
