Clothes labeled “maternity” can often be more expensive than regular clothes. I know that with both of my pregnancies I bought non-maternity items, specifically tops, to go with my maternity jeans and pants. As your belly grows, you may need to switch to all maternity items, but you can get away with buying “regular” clothes at least for the first two trimesters.

Here are some tips for buying non-maternity clothes:

1. Tank tops make a great layering piece. You can buy non-maternity tanks for a discount price at stores like Old Navy (pictured). Look for tanks labeled “extra-long.”
2. Empire waist shirts are fashionable and are a perfect non-maternity buy.
3. Look for tops with shirred sides that will accommodate for your bump.
4. Buy shirts that contain material with some stretch, like jersey material, instead of cotton.
5. The most important detail to look for when buying a non-maternity top is length. Make sure you buy longer tops that will provide you with aedquate coverage.
