Breastfeeding: What to wear

Question: What clothes should I wear that will allow me to easily breastfeed my baby? I am on a budget and I don’t want to spend money on nursing tanks or tops that I can only wear for a specific period of time.

Breastfeeding your baby will be much more comfortable for you and for you tot if you are wearing clothing that will allow easy access for nursing. There is no reason to buy specially designed “nursing tops” when there are plenty of pieces in your current wardrobe that will do just fine. That said, there are also some fashionable nursing tops (check out Babystyle and Glamourmom.com, for example) that you can wear long after you are finished breastfeeding. One more thing—you can get by without buying “nursing tops,” but I highly recommend buying a couple of nursing bras.

Here are ideas for breastfeeding-friendly clothes:
1. Button Down top: You won’t feel overexposed while nursing if you wear a button-down top. Unbutton only what you need for your baby to gain access to your breast. Pictured is a striped woven top from Forever 21.
2. Criss-Cross top: This top will eliminate having to pull your shirt up, thus exposing your entire back. You can easily pull this top over for easy nursing access.
3. Tube top: You simply pull one side down for easy nursing. As far as a bra, avoid a strapless bra with an underwire and opt for a soft, strapless bra that can easily be pushed down.
4. Layer: If wearing a tube top feels too bare for you (or if it is in the winter), layer a long-sleeved button-down shirt over a tube for a stylish look that is breastfeeding-friendly.

Great advice! I often wore plain tee-shirts which were a little bigger than normal so it was easy to feed my baby without showing too much flesh! Wearing an open shirt over a vest top was good too as the shirt kept my back covered.

Got something to say?
