Are sunless tanners safe during pregnancy?
October 15, 2007

Many women, myself included, like to have a little color or glow to their skin. We all know that baking in the sun is no longer an option, so how do you safely add some color to your skin when you are pregnant?
Tanning out in the sun is not only unsafe because of skin cancer, but if you get overheated or dehydrated it is bad for your developing fetus. Chloasma, or the mask of pregnancy, causes dark patches on your skin and can worsen when exposed to sun.
What about sunless tanning lotions? Although some sources say it is safe during pregnancy, other doctors say that the chemicals used in this product have not been thoroughly tested for pregnant women. I would err on the side of caution and stay away from putting unnecessary chemicals on your skin.
Bronzing powder is your best bet when you are pregnant. If you are a novice at bronzing, go to a make-up professional at a department store to try on various shades. You want to look sun-kissed, not overexposed! For a natural look, brush bronzer on your forehead, cheeks, nose and even your chest.
