You can expect your breasts to grow an average of one to two cup sizes while pregnant making a maternity or nursing bra an essential addition to your maternity wardrobe. Find out what you need to know when buying maternity bras.

Maternity or nursing bra? If you plan on breastfeeding your baby, you should go ahead and buy a nursing bra. Designed with drop down sides, a nursing bra will provide easy access for breastfeeding.

Maternity bra features: When buying a maternity or nursing bra, make sure you get measured to ensure a proper fit. Buy a bra that has at least 3 back closures and you should be wearing at the tightest closure initially, adjusting it larger as you grow and as your pregnancy progresses.

When to buy a bra: Some women will find their breasts start to grow and change as early as 8 weeks of pregnancy, however some women don’t notice this until much later. As soon as your normal bras start feeling tight and no longer fit your larger form, it is time to buy a new bra.

What about underwire? It is a myth that you can’t wear a underwire bra while nursing. An underwire bra is safe as long as it fits correctly. PregnancyandBaby.com makes this suggestion: “The underwire should fall well under your breasts, well-under as in it still provides support but won’t put pressure directly on your breasts. The best plan is to go to a professional maternity clothing shop and get measured and fitted for a maternity/nursing bra.”
