Pregnancy fashion begins with maternity shapewear
March 11, 2013
“Celebrities always look so fantastic because underneath their fabulous frocks is the perfect foundation of shapewear,” says Olivia Capone Myers, design director for A Pea in the Pod. “Shapewear gives them the confidence to rock the red carpet, and it will give you confidence, too.”

Pregnant Kim Kardashian works hard to keep her curvalicious figure in shape, but we’re guessing she had some extra help keeping it together in the form-fitting white dress she wore to the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s Oscar Viewing Party last month.

“In order to feel comfortable, I think it’s crucial to find the right layering pieces,” says Olivia. “Camouflaging seams and panty lines creates a more seamless look.”
And there are a lot of maternity shapewear options to choose from, like these:
- Skinny Britches from Spanx by A Pea in the Pod ($42, Destination Maternity): Available in black, nude and pink, Skinny Britches firm tummy, hips, thighs and bottom without binding, pinching or bulging. A cotton gusset is built in for maximum comfort.
- Seamless Strapless Slip by A Pea in the Pod ($40, Destination Maternity): This dark nude foundation piece is strapless and seamless and features a shelf bra. Wear it under every dress and skirt.
“Having the added support that shapewear gives is especially important as your body transforms during and after your pregnancy,” says Olivia, who is currently pregnant. Try these postpartum options:
- Pea Control Nursing Cami by A Pea in the Pod ($39, Destination Maternity): This seamless black camisole features spaghetti straps, scoop neck and a mesh lining. Perfect for those weeks and months following your newborn’s arrival.
- C-panty Tummy Cut Incision Care by A Pea in the Pod ($48, Destination Maternity): The nude panty features is specifically designed for C-section recovery. Incision-area silicone and compression help diminish scarring, swelling, sensitivity and tenderness – all while providing perfect tummy support and slimming.
“As a mom-to-be, layering camisoles and shapers are my new best friend,” says Olivia. “I throw them under absolutely everything!”

Those days and nights following the birth of your newborn are so special. You’re getting to know each other as you begin your beautiful life together. You want to look your very best for company, but baby comes first. These adorable postpartum lounging sets are perfect for the time spent at home with baby and entertaining well-wishers. You may not actually have time to “lounge,” but at least you’ll look great!

No one will guess that you’re wearing loungewear when you opt for the Larrivo® Emily Camisole Set ($138, MothersBoutique.com). Mix and match the colors and patterns of the Emily Camisole, Dakota Pants and Ella Jacket. The built-in NutureBra® Support System features an easy-to-open hidden snap to make nursing a breeze!
The Expressiva™ Paisley Print Nursing Nightgown ($42, exp….com) looks more like a sweet sundress than sleepwear. The charming print gives the nightgown a vintage look and the drop-cup design is easy to open with one hand.

Fall essentials for new moms
August 31, 2012
If you are preparing your new mom wardrobe for fall, make sure you stock up on these essentials that are flattering, easy and stylish. When you have a new baby to take care of, you need clothes that don’t require much work and – if they disguise spit-up that is an added bonus!
A blazer is a fall new mom must-have because it is chic, easy and (best of all!) conceals your postpartum tummy. Look for blazers that fall below your waist, as cropped blazers will only highlight your midsection. Blazers aren’t only for working moms anymore! Pair them with jeans and a white tee for a stylish look. Unstructured blazers are great, such as this Reversible Blazer by Sol Angeles from Piperlime. Love!
A shift dress is a great choice for new moms because it is stylish and is great for concealing your midsection. I love this green floral Miami Shift Dress ($79) with a cute hi-low hemline. Wear this with wedges for dressier occasions or keep it casual in flats.
Colored denim and pants are the hottest trend this season. To wear this trend and flatter your new mom curves, opt for boot-cut jeans over skinny or tapered leg jeans. Darker colors, such as indigo or navy blue, will slim better than bright pinks or corals.
Lastly, oxford shirts are back in a big way. Wear them untucked with jeans and printed ballet flats for a look that is perfect for fall. One great pick is the Fitted Boyfriend Chambray Ruffle Shirt ($55, Gap).

The Eve Alexander Butterfly Tie Maternity/Nursing Top ($45) from Target is a great basic nursing piece to have on hand during the fall and winter months. The long-sleeves and flattering design will keep you comfortable and make breastfeeding baby easy.
