Dressing your post-baby body
July 15, 2007
Dressing your post-baby body can be a challenge. Your maternity clothes are too big, yet your pre-baby clothes are too small. I’ll never forget standing in my closet, listening to my new-born baby wailing and crying along with him because nothing seemed to fit. I’m sure postpartum hormones were partly to blame, but it never hurts to be prepared and pick up a few transition pieces that will feel and look beautiful.

As far as loungewear, it is hard to beat a terry track suit. Many of the pants have a drawstring allowing you to adjust the waistband as your belly starts to flatten. If breastfeeding, pair your track suit with a nursing tank for easy access. Depending on the time of year, a matching lightweight hoodie will complete your look.
Remember the Belly Belt you used during your first trimester? It is great to use after baby to help transition your non-maternity jeans, shorts and Capri pants to fit your post-baby bod.
Shirts that show off your shoulders and neckline and camouflage your belly are great for new-moms. Pair a cute empire-waist top with some transition jeans (Belly band!) and you have a stylish post-baby look. If you are nursing, consider tops with a criss-cross design to allow easy access for nursing. The Essential New Mommy Tee ($29.99 at Babystyle, pictured) has great details, like the cap sleeves, wide hem and gathered sides that will keep you looking stylish and cool.
Lastly, consider dressing in layers and wearing light-weight fabrics to help with the hot flashes that sometimes occur from post-partum hormones. Keep these tips in mind as you make the wonderful transition from mom-to-be to mommy.
Got something to say?
