Lily Allen low-maintenance maternity style
December 28, 2007

British singer Lily Allen conceals her baby bump with a teddy bear as she participated in the Harrods Winter Sale in London this morning.
Allen, 22, said finding her look for 2008 will be easy. “Maternity dresses—big ones!” she told Usmagazine.com.
Allen says that being pregnant is “fantastic,” however she does not plan on raising her baby in the U.S, “Women there are too high maintenance!” she says.
“I remember getting a manicure in New York, and this lady who was having a forearm wax — which I’d never even heard of before! — looked at me and said, ‘You will need one soon. ‘I was like, ‘No! What are you talking about?’
They make you feel really bad about yourself unless you are completely pruned everywhere.”
She goes on to say,”I hate that modern way of thinking that you have to go to the gym 10 times a week, you can’t eat this, you can’t eat that, you should get a spray tan. All that preening makes you look worse anyway.”
What do you think? Does she have a point? Have we gotten to the point where we are too obsessed with our looks? I do feel like having children forces you to be less self-absorbed. I mean, who has time to get a manicure? I barely have time to brush my hair some mornings (thank goodness the wind-blown look is in!).

Got something to say?

I’m an American who’s traveled the world and currently live in Europe. No where are my senses more assaulted by bad style and people who just don’t look good (and this is separate from the obesity issue) than in the U.S.! So if Americans are too obsessed with their looks, it definitely isn’t getting them anywhere.
