Former ER actress Kellie Martin spoke with Modern Mom about raising her daughter, 16-month-old Margaret “Maggie” Heather Christian. The 32-year-old has discovered what is important in her life–and that includes friends. Little Heather’s playgroup consists of Melissa Joan Hart’s son, Mason, and Fred Savage’s son, Oliver. “Maggie’s very lucky to have all these cute boys to play with,” she says.

One thing that is very important to Martin is making sure her daughter is surrounded by non-toxic and organic things. “Slowly but surely everything in my daughter’s closet, crib, playroom and anything that touches her skin will be free of toxic chemicals.”

What are some of her must-have items? “Weleda and Avalon Organics baby skin care products; Can You Dig It? organic cotton clothes; Born Free bottles and sippy cups; Haba toys and wooden toys from TheWoodenWagon.com. (I could go on and on–this might be a whole other article! I’m really passionate about keeping everything around your baby as safe as possible!)”

How concerned are you about the safety of your child’s toys, bottles and clothes? Do you think more needs to be done to ensure these items are not harmful to our children?

I get really frustrated with the misconception that organic=safe. A brand like Avalon Organics, contains lavender in their baby wash. Lavender is a xenoestrogens, which means it can cause problems with reproductive development. When choosing a skin care for baby, look for something that is not only free of phthalates, but free of all OTHER xenoestrogens. Whether or not it is organic, is irrelevant.
