Safely whiten whites
September 4, 2007

If you don’t mind, I think I’ll take a minute to tout the virtues of a little fruit called the lemon. Not only does it look cheery sitting in your fruit bowl, eases the symptoms of morning sickness with its fresh aroma and makes a darn good pie, but it also can whiten your whites!
As an alternative to using harsh bleaches, try this trick to remove stains from whites that are discolored from frequent bleaching or sweat stains:
Add 1/2 of a lemon or 1 1/4 tsp lemon juice to a large pot of water. Bring the solution to a boil, then turn off the heat and stir in the stained garments. Let them soak for an hour, then put dry them as normal.
First magazine says that lemon juice contains camphene that removes the buildup that causes the stains. Pretty cool, huh?
Got something to say?
