Baby shower basics: What to wear

January 31, 2009

You have invited all your friends, registered for baby and decided on the food — but are you still trying to decide on that perfect baby shower outfit? Here are some tips to help you narrow it down.

Color: Save your little black dress for a cocktail party and celebrate this festive occasion by wearing a colorful dress. Whether it is blue, green or pink (you can even coordinate with the sex of your baby), choose a color that flatters your skin tone and will look great in pictures.

Prints: A printed dress can be a beautiful choice for a baby shower outfit, as long as your choose the right pick. Steer clear of horizontal stripes or loud prints that draw attention to your bottom half and look for an all-over floral print, for example

Dress length: You will probably be sitting with all the attention on you — so the last thing you want is a too-short skirt that you are squirming in all night. Look for a dress that hits at or below knee length. A long maxi dress is also a great choice.

Dress or pants: Either one is a good choice! I love the look of black pants and a winter white bump-hugging top. If opting for pants, look for a more boot-cut version for a slimming effect.

Also, you may want to wait to color your hair until you are out of your first trimester.

Liz Lange reveals top maternity essentials

January 30, 2009

Maternity clothes guru Liz Lange recently revealed what she believes are the essential items pregnant women should invest in when shopping on a budget.

We are all watching our money more carefully, which is why it is important to know what maternity clothes you should buy and which ones are not worth your money.

Liz Lange recently spoke with lilsugar.com and revealed her 8 key maternity pieces:

1. Jeans — versatile dark wash
2. Little Black dress – you can dress it up or down
3. Pencil Skirt
4. Fitted Tee
5. Black Pants
6. Suit Jacket – especially if you are a working mom-to-be
7. Sweater or cardigan (depending on the season)
8. “Stretch” pieces that will adjust to your changing body.

One last bit of advice: “Just remember when you’re shopping don’t look at it as just the nine months, it’s longer than that unfortunately. There’s definitely a whole fourth trimester and that is a completely open-ended trimester. For some lucky women, like Hollywood moms, that seems to be like two weeks long, but for us mere mortals that can be up to a year.”

Soothing dry, itchy pregnancy skin

January 28, 2009

Between hormone fluctuations and your ever-expanding body, many women find their skin becomes dry and itchy — especially around their belly, breasts, hips and thighs. How can you stop the itch?

Hydrate from the inside: Staying hydrated and drinking water is not only great for your growing baby, but it also helps keep your skin hydrated from the inside.

Keep hot showers to a minimum: I am not suggesting you take a cold shower, but taking a long, hot shower is drying to your skin. Take a long, warm shower or minimize the time you spend in a hot shower.

Moisturize, moisturize: As soon as you get out of the shower and again before bedtime, smooth on a layer of rich, creamy lotion onto those dry areas.

Humidifier: Sleeping with a humidifier adds moisture to the air.
