You just found out the exciting news: You are pregnant! First of all, congratulations! If you are like many expecting moms-to-be, you are wondering: when will I start to show?

According to our experts at Pregnancyandbaby.com, when you start to show depends on your overall physical shape and how many times you have been pregnant.

If this is your first pregnancy and you are in good overall shape, you may not start to show until 20 weeks. If you are in good shape, but this is not your first pregnancy then you will probably start to show somewhere between 12 and 18 weeks. If you are plus-size, you may not start to show until you are much further along.

How far along were you when you started to show?

I’m 5′8″ and size 2 (pre-preg) and started showing in the 19-20 week range. I found it incredibly annoying when people said to me before then, “Oh my goodness, you’re 16 (etc.) weeks and not even showing!” It made me worry that something was wrong! In reality, everything in my pregnancy is right on target…

I’m only 8 weeks pregnant and it looks like I have a belly already. Is that normal? I’m not obese, I’m 5′8′ and average about 155. It’s either that I’m really really bloated are I’m already starting to show. I can’t believe this! Any else started showing early like me?

i’m very young and in pretty average shape. i’m about 11 weeks along, and i started showing about 3 weeks ago

  10. Kristen on December 22nd, 2008 7:39 pm

I am 30 and in good shape 4′11″ and 98 lb pre-pregnancy and already started showing a bit at 8 weeks. I have a belly popping out a bit and gained 7 lbs so far. My doc said it is normal and I am just gaining some weight early, but will probably gain the same overall as an average person, She said that because I was so thin to begin with I probably needed to gain a bit extra now. I do need to wear baggy shirts now to hide the belly!

  11. Rachel on January 19th, 2009 2:36 pm

I’m thirteen weeks, and I’m looking forward to saying goodbye to the first trimester. I’m 5′3″, I weighed 120, and wore size 3/4 (pre-pregnancy). Thanks to wonderful ‘morning’ sickness that’s lasted all day for two months. I now weigh a 108, but my jeans are starting to feel a bit tighter, probably my butt getting bigger. LOL I’m eighteen, and this is my first pregnancy. I don’t have a belly at all yet, but I can’t wait to get one, to actually get to experience my baby growing.

  12. Elena on January 20th, 2009 10:43 am

i am at 31 weeks, and i didn’t even start showing until about 28 weeks. i’m 5′4 and pre pregnant weight was at 120 lbs. i wouldn’t say i am fit, but i am definitely not chunky. now at 142 lbs, i gained most of it over time but i got the pooch finally and i can finally wear maternity clothes and not look ridiculous. no time is “normal” and i have to remind myself of that when i talk to someone who is not as far along and they are way bigger than me, ha.

  13. Annie on January 31st, 2009 7:53 pm

Hi this is my fourth pregnancy I’m 30 I’m only about 5 wks and I feel like I’ve put on weight already some days I have crazy cravings, but I hope I don’t gain that much weight I’m 5.51/2 feet tall I was 166 lbs pre preg now I’m 171 hopefully I’m just bloated and it will even itself out at the end

  14. Anonymous on February 7th, 2009 4:19 am

Hey i’m 18 and i’m 7 weeks and 5 days. i’m already a small frame weighing 96 pounds being 5″3. My belly sometimes makes me look like i’m about 4 months. But its basically bloating. Its really degrading to me because i get so exited thinkin its the baby.lol

  15. Sabrina on February 9th, 2009 12:41 pm

I am only 10 weeks and have started to show. i am a big girl i am 5′3 215. when i found out i was pregnant. i have dropped 5 pounds since then from being sick. but i can’t fit my regular pants any more and look like im further along. maybe it’s more then one!!!! i hope so!

  16. anonymous on February 19th, 2009 3:15 am

am 7 weeks but my belly still flat,

  17. Kristal G. on February 20th, 2009 1:42 pm

whats weird is that for my first pregnancy i didnt show til 20 weeks, and my second i started showing at 8 weeks, but this pregnancy i am already 13 weeks and still not showing.

  18. Jennifer on February 20th, 2009 10:18 pm

With my first pregnancy, I really didnt start showing until about 16 weeks. Even at 20 weeks, I only had a little bump. this is my second pregnancy, and I am about 6 weeks along, but I am finding some of my tighter shirts dont fit and it hurts to try to suck in! When I do suck mybelly in, there is still a little pooch. I am 5′4″, about 120-125 lbs. not fat at all, but not in shape. My belly has flab and the skin is looser bcause of my first pregnancy (not bad looking really or like a flap or roll, just not a FLAT belly.) I definitely feel like I’m showing because my lower abdomen is hard already. I still have some shirts I want to wear before it gets bad, so I hope I don’t get huge overnight!

  19. Ashleigh on February 28th, 2009 1:38 am

Im 17 5″5 105lbs and 4 weeks pregnant. I cant wait to start showing. This is my first pregnancy. Bc im so small will i show sooner?

  20. Jessica on February 28th, 2009 1:10 pm

Pre-pregnancy, I am 5′4 105 lbs. I am very athletic before and throughout my pregnancies, with kickboxing/karate/running until the day I gave birth. With my first pregnancy, even with severe nausea, I gained 20 lbs between weeks 8 and 12 and the baby bump started to really show already at week 9. Granted it could have been just fat from such dramatic weight gain! In my second pregnancy I started to really show again by week 9, and gained 12 lbs in the first trimester. Still had my flat six pack until week 7. Just goes to show that everyone will experience something different!

  21. Stephanie on March 4th, 2009 2:09 pm

I am 22 years old medium build and started showing with my first son by 12 weeks. I am currently pregnant with my 2nd child and I am 10 1/2 weeks pregnant and started showing. You start showing earlier with your 2nd child then you would with your first. Everyone thought I was pregnant with twins my first pregnancy because I showed so early, but that was not the case at all. The doctor said every pregancy is different and depending on how fast your baby grows will depend how big you get. (or how fast your uterus starts to expand.)

  22. chelsey on March 11th, 2009 4:26 pm

I’m 5′5 and weigh 114 lbs. First check-up was around 6 weeks and I was the same weight as I am now at 11 weeks. No morning sickness. Still not showing though i feel like there’s a little bump or feeling of growth. lol 18 with my first.

  23. Stephanie on March 28th, 2009 7:33 pm

Hi Ladies! Just want to chime in my experience to show anyone reading how every woman and, every pregnancy is different. I am 5′8 normal weight is 177lbs and I eat healthy and exercise. (size 12) I’ve always had a large body frame (size 10 shoes). When I was 18 yrs old with my first pregnancy I was still a healthy girl . . . . the doctors thought I was carrying twins because of the size of my belly . . . well turns out a had a healthy beautiful singleton boy weighing in at 9lbs, 8 oz !! At age 18 yrs, he was 6′4″ tall!! I remember I did not show UNTIL I was about 4 months – - – - – Fast forward: NOW HERE I AM ON MY THIRD PREGNANCY AT 6 WEEKS, AND LO AND BEHOLD I’M HUGE!! And I mean huge. I look as if I am 6 months – not kidding. But keep in mind: I’ve been preggo before, AND I have FIBROIDS which makes my uterus already larger than normal . . . and I haven’t had U/S scan yet to check on number of little darlings I’m carrying (natural conception). Still take my vitamins & eat my greens . . but I’m older now – - – more OUT OF BREATH – - but happy & excited! Love to Ya . . . .

  24. Kelley on March 30th, 2009 11:35 am

Hi all! Found out last Tuesday that I’m 4 weeks along! This is my first pregnancy, (YAY!!!!!) I’m 26, 5″7 and weigh about 110. I have my first appointment with my OBNurse this Friday and this is my question… Is it unusual that I’m already getting the tummy bump? I know I’m not “showing” bc the baby is the size of an apple seed… but I already can’t fit into my pants! Just wondering if anyone else is in the same boat as me.. :)

  25. Anxious on April 11th, 2009 6:57 pm

I am 26 and this is my first pregnancy. I just had my 16 week check up on 4/1/09 and I weighed in at 162 which is 10 pounds lighter than when I first found out I was expecting. I am average height at 5′6. I am one of those who when people see me around they say that I don’t even look like I’m pregnant at all. I wouldn’t dare say that I am in shape but I will say that I am a bit concerned though b/c I was extremely sick the beginning of my pregnancy and although I’ve calmed down a bit, I am still getting really bad spells here and there; Most people advised me that morning sickness usually slows around the 4th month and although I don’t get sick often now, it’s very bad when I do. I am supposed to find out the sex of my baby on 4/29/09, should I be concerned?

  26. Wondering on April 15th, 2009 on April 15th, 2009 7:31 pm

I am 7 weeks pregnant for the first time. I havn’t really been sick, but very light headed! I am 5′9″ and overweight, I way 284 lbs. My concern is will I show at all? 11 weeks 3 days: 118 lbs, 5′7″, wearing pre-preg size 0-2. Starting to show, but I just look bloaty. Already packing away my pants with higher waists.

Hi i’m seventeen and this is my first pregnancy. I’m ten weeks and gained 3 pounds already. I scared cause i don’t have any morning sickness sore breast or any thing. People are saying i’m starting to pulge out a little but i don’t know. Its it normal to not have any morning sickness

  30. charity on May 22nd, 2009 3:30 pm

this is my second child, im 5′3 111lbs
im now 7 weeks and i have a little pooch, my jeans and clothes fit me tight, my family can see the little pooch, i do not think it is bloating, i think it is showing,… and at night it gets even bigger and really tight feeling, but in the morning i still have the small pooch, which i read your stomach will get bigger at night and will look a slight bigger, but i dont understand how you can start to show so soon, … with my first child i looked like i was 8 months when i was only 6, i got really big, and showed alot very early on, i think alot of women are different, with my first i remember having a big belly at 3 months it might have been 4 months along, cant quite remember 3 years ago. allthough strangers cant tell yet my family and friends can, been very lucky so far with this pregancy, no sickness or anything, really bad heart burn though, anyone know what i can take for that?? go back to the doc june 1st cant wait i hope all is well, good luck to all of you, and congrats.

With my first son, I was 19/20 years old. 110 pounds, 5′8″…didn’t start to show until I was 6+ months along. With my second son, I was 21, 115 pounds…started to show around 4.5-5 months. With my third son, I was 23, 115 pounds…started to show around 2.5-3 months. Now, I am pregnant with BABY NUMBER 4, I am 24.5, 115 pounds, about 9 weeks along and already starting to show.
A lot of my pre-pregnancy pants are not fitting…people are starting to ask…but we are not ready for them to know, so we just tell them I am trying to gain weight, so I will be healthier for my children…..

Hi i´m 16 young, and i´ve been reading some of these comments, and i enjoyed the site. i just found out about my pregnancy, im about 10 weeks. i´m trying to get as much info as i can, and learn as much as possible, i´m a little scared i don´t want my baby to have a hard time growing or anything, so im trying to stay fit and healthy. Although i am 5´8 and about 125lb, i just hope everything goes as smooth as possible. I´d really love it if anyone has some good advice for me lol.

My cousin was throwing up to almost every smell. It took couple of weeks before she was OK. Congratulations to all.

  37. CanadaMom on July 15th, 2009 9:59 pm

Everything I’ve heard basically implies the shorter or thinner you are, and the more children you’ve had previously, the sooner you will start showing. The first two because there is less space to expand because the torso is smaller, the latter because the uterus expands sooner each time.

Every woman is different though. I started showing at about 10 weeks for my first pregnancy with triplets. My second pregnancy, just one baby, I started showing around 10 weeks again.

This is in contrast to what is expected. I am 5′8″ and a pre-pregnancy size 18. Obviously triplets show sooner than a singleton, but not significantly sooner because at 10 weeks a baby is smaller than a peach. There is plenty of room in my belly, and most other women’s as well, for three peaches :)

Hi. I am 21. Weighed 105 prepregnancy and im 5′3” iv always been a very petite girl. I am 17 weeks pregnant and i now weigh 113 lbs as of my last doctors apt 2 days ago. My belly is actually pretty big i actually dont look 4 months pregnant more like 6 months pregnant lol is that normal? does than mean im gonna get super huge or that my baby is gonna be big? jw. O and i started feeling the baby move 2 weeks ago and this week it is like the energizer bunny! it keeps going and going and going! all day every day! is that normal? i always heard an active baby is a healthy baby. Hope this is true. And also when does that ”pregnant glow” start? my boyfriend says i have a glow but i just dont see it! lol

    This was back in June:

With my first son, I was 19/20 years old. 110 pounds, 5′8″…didn’t start to show until I was 6+ months along. With my second son, I was 21, 115 pounds…started to show around 4.5-5 months. With my third son, I was 23, 115 pounds…started to show around 2.5-3 months. Now, I am pregnant with BABY NUMBER 4, I am 24.5, 115 pounds, about 9 weeks along and already starting to show.

Is this wrong, to FIB about something so big??

    Now, in December:

With my first son, I gained a total of 22 pounds and he was born 7 pounds 8 ounces. With my second son, I gained a total of 22 pounds and he was born 8 pounds 3 ounces. With my third son, I gained a total of 15 pounds and he was born 7 pounds 9 ounces. Now, pregnant with BABY NUMBER 4, I have already gained 42 pounds, and still have 7 weeks until my duedate. (Baby will be born by c-section, 10 days before DD.)
Is this weird to gain so much more weight? Or normal, because this is #4?

Hi I am 12 wks with my first child. I have gained 7lbs so far. I thought I was getting big, my sig says i’m not really showing and my sister says i look big so It must be the bloating , my waistband is getting tighter size 7-9 although not really ready for preg clothes yet, thinking maybe around 16 wks and on. I had no morning sickness and no cravings I would say I feel normal except burned meat and garlic get me bad..lol
